Giving blood this summer

Posted by: | June 29, 2012 | No Comment |

Did You Know?  5 million patients in the US need blood every year.

The need for blood is constant.  If you could not give at the Carolina Blood Drive this past June 5th, we urge you to visit the American Red Cross website and find a drive or collection center near you.

Donations are down 10% across the country.  We need you!  Give life.  Give blood!

Again, thanks to everyone who helped make the 24th Carolina Blood Drive a success.  While we did not make our goal, we still made a difference for those who may need blood in our area.

We were so honored to have great guests to our drive.  You can view Coach Larry Fedora and some of his players at the drive on tarheelblue.com.  Eric Montross, Patti Thorp, Sha’Leema Miller Miss NC International2012, and Ramses all came out to greet donors and volunteers.  We appreciate their time and support!  Thank you to WCHL, Chapel Hill Magazine and the Daily Tar Heel for their coverage of the event.

CAROLINA BLOOD DRIVE DONORS AND VOLUNTEERS:
It is estimated that 97% of the population will be touched by the need for blood products at some point in their lives, and the blood that was collected today at the 24th annual Carolina Blood Drive will help ensure that when those products are needed, they will be available.  Today, with your help, our final number was 784 productive units of blood which will be turned into 2,352  products that will help sustain the lives of the sick and injured as one unit of blood can impact as many as three patients.  Patients and/or families in area hospitals soon will be thanking you for the blood you gave today on their behalf.  It takes over 1600 units of blood daily for the Carolinas Region of the American Red Cross to meet the needs of hospitals and Tar Heels supplied almost half of that need for one day out of the year through this effort. Tar Heel donors can feel proud of their selfless contributions that will help patients with cancer and many other illnesses.  After the 2011 summer blood drive, the American Red Cross worked hard to listen to the feedback from their donors.  Equipment and staff were almost doubled for the blood drive this year and it showed!  The bleachers were available for seating, but hardly a donor one had to sit in them – the American Red Cross was able to get donors in and out in almost no time flat.  A new set-up and donor registration systems also worked wonders to help ensure a successful blood drive.  Your donation of time and blood continues to be VERY important and feedback is taken seriously.

We value your feedback  – so please take the time to go to
our feedback form and give us feedback on the drive and find out door prize winners which will be posted Wednesday afternoon!

Carolina’s giving spirit has come through once again through this remarkable public service effort with a supportive visit from Eric Montross, Patti Thorp, Coach Larry Fedora along with Rameses and Carolina football players:  Sean Fitzpatrick, Erik Highsmith, Casey Barth and Jonathan Cooper.   Hope you were able to hear the coverage on WCHL, WQDR and other stations.  Thanks to all.

Mark your calendars now for the Holiday Carolina Blood Drive on Tuesday, December 11th, 2012 in Fetzer Gym, 7:30a.m. – 1p.m.  Hope to see you there!
